How to obtain CHRP Designation
Congratulations on your interest in pursuing a national Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation. You are well on your way to establishing yourself as one of the highest ranking and skilled professionals in Canadian business – in demand by today's top employers.
In order to obtain the CHRP designation, candidates must successfully complete a series of steps, which are listed below.

Please note the new degree requirement: Effective January 1, 2011, the CHRP designation will only be awarded to applicants who have passed both exams and have attained a Bachelor's degree from a university or an applied degree from a community college. At that time, a degree will also be required for CHRP candidates registering to write the National Professional Practice Assessment TM.
Steps to Obtaining a CHRP Designation
Step One: Application for Association Membership

Step Two: Pass the National Knowledge Exam TM
The National Knowledge Exam (NKE) is a nationally regulated academic exam that tests your academic knowledge of the Required Professional Capabilities,HR's body of knowledge. Consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions, candidates chose the best of four possible answers. A minimum grade of 70 per cent is required to pass. Upon successful completion of the exam, you will be recognized as a CHRP candidate.
How to Prepare for the NKE
There are a number of resources available to help you prepare for the exam, including: independent study; post-secondary and online courses; seminars; etc. To get started, you can visit the Exam Study Resources section of the CCHRA Web site, where you will find sample study questions, information on online preparation courses and provincial workshops, links to universities and colleges, and more.
You are encouraged to visit the RPCs section of our Web site and the CCHRA Web site to view the content on which the exam is based.
The association will provide various development activities to help you prepare for the NKE. They can help you assess your current knowledge and abilities and determine development activities to help you pass the exam.
How to Register for the NKE
Attached here is the application form to write exams. Complete the form, enclose the appropriate fee as indicated on the form and return to the address indicated at least 60 days prior to the scheduled date of the exam.
Thirty days prior to the scheduled exam date, you will receive:
- written confirmation of your registration to write the NKE;
- the test location, time and any necessary procedures.
You must bring the confirmation letter and photo identification to gain entry to the test centre. *Fees are subject to change without notice at the discretion of CCHRA.
Passing the NKE
You will be informed of your test results approximately six weeks after the date on which the exam was written. Upon notification that you have successfully completed the NKE, you will be able to use the CHRP Candidate title as mentioned above.
The next step in the process of obtaining the CHRP designation is to write the National Professional Practice Assessment TM (NPPA.) CHRP candidates have five years to complete the NPPA from the time they pass the NKE.
Please note: Those who not pass the NPPA within five years of passing the NKE can no longer use the CHRP candidate title and will have to begin the certification process from Step 1.
Failing to Pass the NKE
If you do not pass the NKE, you can continue to take the exam and pay the required fee until a passing grade is attained.
Step Three: Pass the National Professional Practice Assessment TM
The National Professional Practice Assessment (NPPA) is a nationally regulated exam that tests your experiential knowledge of the RPCs, HR's body of knowledge. CHRP candidates are tested on their ability to apply theory and knowledge to situations typically encountered by HR professionals. The NPPA consists of 65 scenarios based on “critical incidents” experienced by real world HR professionals, including five scenarios which have been added to each exam to allow the CCHRA to pre-test new questions. Pre-test questions will not affect the score.
Candidates should have at least three to five years of practical experience in human resources management prior to writing the exam. They must attain a minimum of 70 per cent on the exam to pass. In order to obtain certification, the NPPA must be written within five years of passing the NKE.

Passing the NPPA and Receiving Your CHRP Designation
If you successfully complete the NPPA within the five year period of passing the NKE and sign CCHRA's National Code of Ethics, CCHRA will issue you your CHRP designation in certificate form. In addition, unless you notify HRPNL otherwise, your name will be listed in the National CHRP Registry.
Failing to Pass the NPPA
If you do not pass the NPPA, you can continue to take the exam and pay the required fee until a passing grade is attained. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the NPPA within the five year period after passing the NKE.
Please note: Those who not pass the NPPA within five years of passing the NKE can no longer use the CHRP Candidate title and will have to begin the certification process from Step 1.
